เพลงนี้ถูกคอมมิชชั่นโดยวง The Royal Philharmonic Society หรือเป็นที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ "The Philharmonic Society" ของอังกฤษ โดยการครั้งแรกจัดขึ้นที่ St James's Hall กรุงลอนดอน สหราชอาณาจักร วันที่ 19 พฤษภาคม ค.ศ. 1886 อำนวยเพลงโดย Saint-Saëns หลังจากการเสียชีวิตของคนที่เป็นทั้งเพื่อนและที่ปรึกษาของเขา ซึ่งก็คือ Franz Liszt ในวันที่ 31 กรกฏาคม ค.ศ. 1886 Saint-Saëns จึงได้เขียนงานชิ้นนี้เพื่อมอบให้กับความทรงจำที่มีต่อFranz Liszt

The symphony was commissioned by The Royal Philharmonic Society (later known by The Philharmonic Society) in England. The first performance was given in London on 19 May 1886, at St James's Hall, conducted by the composer himself. After the death of his friend and mentor Franz Liszt on 31 July 1886, Saint-Saëns dedicated the work to Liszt's memory.
